Curtis Macdonald

Allured by the emotive sounds of saxophonists such as Art Pepper and Ben Webster, as well as the explosivity of players such as Greg Osby, Steve Coleman, and Steve Lehman, Curtis' seeks a melodic virtuosity in his playing that extends beyond harmony to integrate rhythmic counterpoint and more abstract philosophies.

Says Curtis:

"While I am influenced by a variety of composers such a Carl Stalling and Raymond Scott, I am also much inspired by the operas my grandfather played me as a child - for their purity and their heartbreak quality, which takes the listener to the furthest edges of emotion".

Curtis' versatility incorporates listening with the ears of a sound designer, playing to capture a sense of fluid serenity and composing to 'tickle' the mind, but without losing a sense of unity.

Raised in Canada, Curtis moved to New York City in 2003 and is currently preparing a new album while working as an instructor in sound design at the New School University, New York. He is also composer for Manhattan music house Audiobrain and involved in collaborations with a number of international artists. He recently returned from several months residence at the Banff Centre, Canada.
